The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has approved changes in land use to advance the proposed Sardar Patel Sports Enclave, a project estimated at over ₹5,000 crore and planned in the vicinity of the Narendra Modi Stadium. The decision allows the conversion of more than 56,000 square metres of park land for sports infrastructure, marking a significant shift in urban land priorities.
Officials said multiple town planning amendments and land acquisitions are being processed to enable tendering and phased construction. The enclave is expected to include multi-sport facilities and supporting infrastructure aimed at positioning Ahmedabad as a major sporting hub.
The move, however, raises familiar questions on the balance between public open spaces and large infrastructure ambitions. While civic authorities argue the project will enhance the city’s sporting capacity and economic profile, the reallocation of designated green areas is likely to invite scrutiny as the plan moves into execution.
