In a significant push to modernise the Capital’s electricity backbone, the Government of Delhi has launched a series of power infrastructure projects aimed at improving supply reliability, safety and long term grid resilience across key urban pockets.

At the centre of the initiative is a ₹160 crore underground cabling project in Chandni Chowk, designed to replace overhead lines in one of the city’s most congested commercial districts. The shift to subterranean networks is expected to reduce fire hazards, minimise outage risks during extreme weather, and improve the visual landscape in heritage zones.
New GIS Substation to Strengthen Load Management
Authorities have also operationalised a Gas Insulated Switchgear substation to enhance load distribution efficiency. GIS technology, known for compact design and higher reliability, is particularly suited to dense urban environments where land availability remains constrained.
Officials indicated that the new infrastructure will bolster peak load management, especially during summer months when Delhi’s power demand routinely crosses record thresholds. By strengthening the last mile distribution network, the administration aims to reduce transformer failures and localised breakdowns that disrupt commercial and residential activity.
Energy Storage Systems Introduced
A notable feature of the upgrade is the introduction of battery energy storage systems intended to stabilise voltage fluctuations and support grid balancing. As renewable energy integration expands across the region, storage capacity becomes critical to maintaining uninterrupted supply.
Energy planners suggest that such systems will also provide contingency backup during sudden demand surges, reducing dependence on emergency load shedding measures.

While public infrastructure narratives often centre on highways and metro corridors, power reliability remains the silent enabler of economic productivity. For real estate stakeholders, consistent electricity supply directly influences asset valuation, tenant retention and commercial viability.
