India’s power infrastructure is preparing for a demanding summer, with peak electricity demand projected to touch 270 GW, a level that will test both generation capacity and fuel supply chains.
The government has initiated steps to secure coal availability, including building up stockpiles and ensuring steady linkages to thermal power plants. These measures come against the backdrop of past summers when supply constraints led to outages in several states.
At the same time, there is a parallel push to expand renewable energy capacity and strengthen battery storage systems. The aim is to reduce pressure on coal-based generation over the long term, even as it remains central to meeting immediate demand.
The situation highlights the structural tension within India’s energy transition. While clean energy targets continue to advance, the grid remains heavily dependent on coal to manage peak loads and seasonal spikes.
Much will depend on coordination between coal producers, power generators and state utilities in the weeks ahead. A stable supply through the summer months will be critical not only for households but also for industrial activity, which tends to accelerate during this period.
