The Uttarakhand government has approved an infrastructure plan worth about ₹700 crore in preparation for the Kumbh Mela in 2027, with a focus on improving urban services and managing large scale pilgrim movement in Haridwar.
The proposed works include construction of new bridges, road widening, riverfront development and upgrades to sanitation and drinking water systems. Authorities are also planning a control room complex equipped with modern monitoring systems and a helipad to coordinate crowd management and emergency response.
Officials said the projects are being designed to handle peak footfall during the religious gathering while leaving behind long term civic improvements for the city. Haridwar witnesses a sharp surge in visitors during the Kumbh, placing pressure on transport networks and basic services.
The investment reflects a familiar pattern where large religious events drive targeted infrastructure spending, often accelerating projects that might otherwise move slowly. In this case, the emphasis is on strengthening logistics, safety and public amenities in a city that serves as a major pilgrimage centre.
With timelines fixed around the 2027 event, execution and coordination across agencies will be critical to ensure readiness and avoid last minute bottlenecks.
