The proposed bridge along Chilavannoor Bund Road in Kochi has moved closer to execution, with state authorities advancing clearances and technical planning for a structure intended to ease congestion across one of the city’s most constrained mobility corridors.
Designed to improve connectivity between key residential zones and arterial routes, the bridge is expected to decongest narrow bund roads that currently handle traffic volumes far beyond their intended capacity. Urban mobility planners say the intervention will streamline east–west movement while reducing travel time for commuters navigating daily bottlenecks.
The project forms part of Kochi’s broader urban transport strategy, which aims to integrate road upgrades with water metro routes, bus modernization and non-motorised transport infrastructure. Officials indicate that drainage resilience and environmental safeguards are being factored into the design, given the area’s proximity to backwaters and its vulnerability to seasonal flooding.
Transport engineers caution that execution sequencing and traffic diversion planning will be critical to minimize disruption during construction. Once completed, the bridge is expected to improve last-mile connectivity, support local commerce and enhance emergency response access in densely populated neighbourhoods.
