In a move that signals a sharper turn towards manufacturing-led growth, the Union Cabinet has approved a ₹3.36 lakh crore programme to develop 100 industrial parks across the country. The scheme, spread over six years, will cover nearly 33,000 acres and is expected to anchor the next phase of India’s industrial expansion.
The plan focuses on building core infrastructure within these parks, including internal roads, power supply, water systems and logistics connectivity. The objective is to reduce the cost of doing business for manufacturers, while creating plug-and-play ecosystems that can attract both domestic and global investors.
Officials indicated that the parks will be strategically located to align with existing freight corridors, highways and ports, allowing smoother movement of goods. The Centre’s role will be to support infrastructure creation, while states will facilitate land availability and clearances.
The approval comes at a time when the government is seeking to deepen its production-linked incentive framework and position India as an alternative manufacturing base in global supply chains. By clustering industries within well-serviced zones, policymakers expect gains in efficiency, scale and export competitiveness.
However, execution will remain the key test. Past experience with industrial corridors and special economic zones suggests that land acquisition, coordination with states and timely infrastructure delivery will determine whether the plan meets its stated goals.
