The Pune Municipal Corporation has stepped up execution on a set of long-pending mobility projects, with work accelerating on a new bridge over the Mula-Mutha river and key road widening stretches in Koregaon Park and Kalyaninagar. The push comes as the city prepares for the monsoon, a period when existing bottlenecks tend to worsen.
Civic officials indicate that portions of the road expansion have already been completed, with the remaining work being taken up on priority. The bridge project, seen as critical to decongesting traffic in the eastern corridor, is also being advanced to improve cross-river connectivity.
The renewed pace reflects a familiar pattern in urban infrastructure, where deadlines are often driven by seasonal urgency rather than long-term planning. Pune’s traffic challenges are not new, but the response has remained incremental, focused on widening existing roads rather than rethinking mobility at a network level.
While these interventions may offer short-term relief, they are unlikely to address the structural causes of congestion. Without parallel investment in public transport integration and demand management, the gains from expanded road capacity tend to erode quickly. The current push, though necessary, underlines the limits of piecemeal solutions in a rapidly growing city.
