The Railways has moved ahead with a ₹1,481 crore project to expand the Bengaluru–Bangarpet corridor, a stretch that has increasingly come under pressure from rising passenger and freight traffic.
The plan involves adding two additional tracks along a 42 km section, effectively converting the existing line into a four-track corridor. The project has been notified as a special railway initiative, a classification that is expected to streamline approvals and reduce procedural delays.
This corridor forms a critical link in the suburban and intercity rail network around Bengaluru, where delays and congestion have become routine. By separating fast and slow-moving trains, the expansion is expected to improve punctuality and enhance overall line capacity.
Officials argue that the project is essential to support the region’s continued economic growth, particularly as industrial activity and commuter volumes increase. The corridor also carries a significant share of freight traffic, adding to the strain on existing infrastructure.
However, as with similar rail expansion projects, timelines and land-related issues will be closely watched. Execution on the ground, rather than clearances on paper, will determine how quickly the benefits reach commuters.
