The decision by National Highways Authority of India to award work for two flyovers and underpasses along the Jaipur stretch of NH-48 Jaipur Bypass brings attention back to a persistent gap in India’s highway expansion story. While new corridors have expanded capacity between cities, congestion within urban stretches continues to erode these gains.
The sanctioned project, estimated at around ₹130 crore, targets one of Jaipur’s busiest traffic arteries where local and through traffic intersect. The plan includes grade separators aimed at easing bottlenecks, improving travel time and reducing accident risk on a corridor that carries both commercial and passenger vehicles.
The intervention follows a familiar pattern. Over the past decade, highway construction has prioritised long-distance connectivity, but traffic build-up near city limits has emerged as a recurring constraint. In several cases, bypasses and ring roads have not kept pace with rising vehicle volumes, leading to choke points that undermine overall corridor efficiency.
Officials maintain that such targeted upgrades can deliver quicker relief compared to large greenfield projects. Execution under the EPC model is expected to keep timelines tighter, with completion projected by 2028. However, past experience suggests that land acquisition, utility shifting and coordination with local agencies often determine whether these timelines hold.
For Jaipur, the upgrade is less about expansion and more about correction. As traffic continues to grow, the effectiveness of national highways will increasingly depend on how well these urban stretches are managed. The latest project is a step in that direction, though its impact will hinge on timely delivery and integration with the city’s broader mobility plan.
