The Centre’s renewed emphasis on expanding natural gas infrastructure points to a structural gap in India’s energy network, where demand has outpaced the reach of pipelines and distribution systems. Despite policy support over the past decade, access to gas remains uneven across regions, limiting its role in the broader energy mix.
The latest directive focuses on accelerating pipeline development and strengthening city gas distribution under the oversight of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board. The aim is to improve last-mile connectivity for industries and households, while ensuring more reliable supply in the face of global disruptions.
India has long positioned natural gas as a transition fuel, cleaner than conventional fossil fuels and critical for sectors such as fertilisers, power and urban transport. However, infrastructure constraints have held back adoption. Several industrial clusters still lack adequate pipeline connectivity, forcing reliance on costlier or more polluting alternatives.
Officials are now pushing for faster approvals and greater coordination with state governments to address bottlenecks. The expansion of city gas networks, particularly in smaller cities, is also being prioritised to widen access beyond major urban centres.
Yet, the challenge extends beyond building pipelines. Pricing volatility in global gas markets and dependence on imports continue to influence affordability and demand. Without parallel progress on supply security and pricing mechanisms, infrastructure expansion alone may not deliver the intended shift.
The current push suggests a recognition that energy transition goals will depend as much on network readiness as on policy intent. Bridging this gap will be key if natural gas is to play a larger role in India’s evolving energy landscape.
