Mumbai’s severe water shortage has prompted civic authorities to suspend water supply to new construction sites and impose restrictions on industrial and commercial establishments.
The city’s seven reservoirs currently hold just over 10 per cent of their total capacity, enough to meet demand for only a few weeks. The situation has been aggravated by one of the weakest June monsoons in over a decade.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has stopped supplying water to new construction projects and swimming pools and has reduced water allocations to industrial and commercial users by 20 per cent.
The move could temporarily impact project timelines across Mumbai’s real estate and infrastructure sectors, particularly projects that depend heavily on municipal water supply during construction.
Industry experts say the situation highlights the growing importance of sustainable urban water management and the need for long-term investments in water security infrastructure. Authorities expect the pressure to ease once monsoon rainfall intensifies later this month.
The water shortage also raises important questions about climate resilience and the ability of rapidly growing cities to secure essential resources for future urban expansion.
