India is planning to develop seven Integrated Check Posts (ICPs), also known as integrated land ports, to improve cross-border trade and strengthen connectivity with neighbouring countries.
Out of the seven proposed facilities, five are planned in the strategically important Siliguri Corridor, which connects mainland India with the northeastern states.
The move is expected to improve logistics efficiency, facilitate trade and support regional development.
The Land Ports Authority of India (LPAI) plans to develop seven new integrated land ports across the country, with five of the proposed facilities to be located in the Siliguri Corridor.
The Siliguri Corridor is a narrow stretch of land that connects India’s northeastern states with the rest of the country.
The proposed projects aim to improve trade and passenger movement across India’s land borders. The new facilities are expected to strengthen India’s connectivity with neighbouring countries, including Bangladesh, Bhutan and Nepal.
Integrated land ports provide facilities such as customs clearance, immigration services, cargo handling and passenger terminals at a single location.
The projects are expected to reduce delays in cargo movement and improve the efficiency of cross-border trade. Better border infrastructure can lower transportation costs and reduce transit times for goods.
The proposed facilities are also expected to support industries that depend on exports and imports. Improved connectivity can encourage investments in logistics, warehousing and transport services. The projects are also expected to create direct and indirect employment opportunities in border regions.
