Relentless monsoon rainfall has severely disrupted travel between Mumbai and Pune after a landslide struck the Missing Link section of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, forcing authorities to temporarily close key stretches of one of India’s busiest transport corridors. The incident has once again highlighted the growing challenges that extreme weather poses to critical infrastructure and the importance of building more climate-resilient transport networks.
The landslide occurred near the newly developed Missing Link project in the ghat section following continuous heavy rainfall across western Maharashtra. As debris and mud reached the carriageway, the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) and traffic police suspended vehicle movement on affected sections of both the expressway and the old Mumbai-Pune Highway as a precautionary measure. Emergency teams were deployed immediately to clear debris, inspect the road surface and restore safe traffic movement.
The Mumbai-Pune Expressway serves as a vital economic corridor, carrying thousands of passenger vehicles and commercial trucks every day. Any disruption on the route has a direct impact on regional logistics, industrial supply chains and cargo movement between Mumbai Port, Jawaharlal Nehru Port and manufacturing hubs across Pune and western Maharashtra.
Heavy rainfall also affected railway operations in the Bhor Ghat section between Karjat and Lonavala, where multiple landslides disrupted services. Central Railway suspended train operations before gradually restoring movement on one line after extensive clearance work. Restoration activities continue on the remaining tracks as engineers monitor slope stability and remove loose debris.
Authorities reopened sections of the expressway after debris removal and safety inspections, although traffic remained slow because of waterlogging and diversions. Motorists were advised to follow official traffic updates and avoid unnecessary travel while restoration work continued.
The incident has also drawn attention to the engineering challenges associated with constructing transport infrastructure through mountainous terrain. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis described the Missing Link project as an engineering achievement and said that initial challenges are sometimes unavoidable in large infrastructure developments. He added that the government remains committed to addressing safety concerns while continuing work on the project.
Infrastructure experts have increasingly stressed the importance of integrating climate adaptation measures into future transport projects. Improved slope stabilisation, advanced drainage systems, continuous geological monitoring and early warning technologies can help reduce the impact of extreme rainfall events on highways and rail corridors.
India has witnessed a growing number of weather-related disruptions in recent years as intense rainfall events become more frequent during the monsoon season. For logistics companies, transport operators and infrastructure developers, maintaining uninterrupted connectivity requires not only new infrastructure but also stronger resilience planning and faster emergency response mechanisms.
The Mumbai-Pune Expressway remains one of the country’s most important transport assets, supporting passenger mobility and commercial freight movement between two major economic centres. While restoration work has helped resume traffic, the latest landslide serves as a reminder that climate resilience must become an integral part of future infrastructure planning to ensure safe, reliable and uninterrupted connectivity.
