India is on the verge of completing one of the world’s largest railway electrification programmes, with only 269 route kilometres of the country’s broad gauge railway network yet to be electrified. The milestone is expected to be achieved during the current financial year, marking a major step towards cleaner, faster and more efficient rail transport.
According to the latest railway data, 70,002 route kilometres out of a total 70,271 route kilometre broad gauge network have already been electrified, taking the national electrification level to 99.6%. The remaining sections are spread across Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Assam, Goa and Rajasthan, where engineering challenges and difficult terrain have slowed the final phase of execution.
The electrification programme has transformed Indian Railways over the past decade. While around 21,400 route kilometres were electrified between 1948 and 2014, the pace has increased significantly in recent years through sustained investment and faster project execution. The Railway Ministry has allocated ₹5,000 crore for electrification works during the 2026-27 financial year to complete the remaining stretches.
Electric rail operations offer several operational and environmental advantages over diesel locomotives. Electric trains accelerate faster, reduce fuel costs, lower maintenance requirements and improve freight movement across busy corridors. Regenerative braking technology also allows trains to recover energy during operation, improving overall efficiency.
The programme also supports India’s long term sustainability goals. Indian Railways has set an ambitious target of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2030, well ahead of the country’s broader climate commitments. As more renewable energy is integrated into the power grid, railway electrification is expected to play a key role in reducing transport sector emissions while cutting dependence on imported diesel.
Infrastructure experts believe complete electrification will strengthen the railway network’s ability to handle growing passenger demand and rising freight volumes. It will also enable the deployment of more powerful electric locomotives capable of hauling heavier loads across dedicated freight corridors and high density routes.
The remaining unfinished sections are concentrated mainly in Karnataka, where about 120 route kilometres are yet to be electrified, followed by Tamil Nadu, Assam, Goa and Rajasthan. Officials expect these projects to be completed within the current financial year, subject to local execution conditions and terrain-related challenges.
The electrification drive complements several ongoing railway modernisation initiatives, including network expansion, signalling upgrades, station redevelopment and the deployment of advanced safety systems. Together, these investments aim to improve operational reliability while supporting economic growth through better connectivity.
For India’s infrastructure sector, nearing complete railway electrification represents more than an engineering achievement. It reflects the country’s growing ability to deliver large scale infrastructure projects that combine economic efficiency with environmental responsibility. Once the remaining sections are completed, India will operate one of the world’s largest fully electrified broad gauge railway networks, providing a strong foundation for future freight expansion, passenger mobility and sustainable transport.
