Tamil Nadu has dropped the Parandur airport project

The state government is looking at new locations for Chennai’s second airport; these two airports have been recommended by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) for a feasibility study. The new airports is planned to serve Chennai Metropolitan region.

Earlier, Gummidipoondi in Tiruvallur and Cheyyur in Chengalpattu were the locations being considered for building the airport, but the government reportedly selected the two new sites within one week of dropping the Parandur plan.

Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay said Chennai needs a second airport because the city is growing.

The airport is expected to help with more passenger traffic, industrial growth, cargo transportation, and demand from the Chennai region. CM Vijay stated that the new site should cause minimal damage to farmland and residential regions.

The project faced opposition because of its possible impact on farmers and local residents.
The government is also approving land acquisition and environmental clearances for the project. Parandur was located near the Chennai-Bengaluru highway, around 28 km from Sriperumbudur. The decision to cancel Parandur has also created controversy.

The main question everyone’s asking is where Chennai’s second airport will finally built.
