Rajasthan Gets ₹882 Crore Highway Upgrade as NHAI Floats Tender for 68-km Four-Laning

Rajasthan is set for a major highway infrastructure upgrade with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) inviting bids for the four-laning of a combined 68.14-km stretch across National Highway 954 and National Highway 54.

The project has an estimated cost of ₹882.52 crore and forms part of a broader ₹2,386-crore highway development programme approved by the Centre in August 2026.

The proposed work covers two important stretches in northern Rajasthan. These include the Sadhuwali-Banwala section of NH-954 and the Banwala-Hanumangarh section of NH-54.

The project will involve upgrading the existing road network to four lanes along with paved shoulders. The expansion is intended to improve traffic movement, road capacity and connectivity along the corridor.

The latest tender activity marks a shift from project approval towards implementation. For infrastructure projects, the tendering stage is an important milestone because it establishes the framework for selecting the agency responsible for construction and execution.

The two highway sections are located in an important part of Rajasthan’s road network, where improved connectivity can support the movement of passengers, agricultural produce, commercial vehicles and other freight.

Four-laning also has implications beyond simply adding road capacity. Divided highway infrastructure can provide more predictable travel conditions and improve the ability of traffic to move between towns and economic centres.

The inclusion of paved shoulders is another significant component. Proper shoulders provide additional road space and can improve safety and operational resilience, particularly for breakdowns, emergency vehicles and maintenance activity.

The ₹882.52-crore project is part of a wider push to expand and upgrade India’s national highway network. The Centre’s broader approval of ₹2,386 crore for highway development in Rajasthan reflects continued investment in road connectivity across the state.

Rajasthan’s geography makes highway connectivity particularly important. Large distances between urban centres mean road infrastructure plays a major role in linking cities, towns, industrial areas and agricultural markets.

The latest four-laning project could therefore strengthen an important transport corridor while creating additional construction activity in the region.

For NHAI, the tender also represents another project entering the procurement pipeline at a time when road development remains one of India’s major infrastructure priorities.

Once construction begins, the project will require coordinated execution across land, civil works, drainage, road safety and traffic management.

The development demonstrates how India’s highway expansion is increasingly moving beyond major metropolitan corridors to regional routes that connect smaller cities and economic centres.

With 68.14 km included in the latest package, the Rajasthan project represents a substantial addition to the state’s four-lane highway network and could improve connectivity along the NH-954 and NH-54 corridors once completed.
