Delhi Clears 5.5-km Elevated Corridor on Maa Anandmayee Marg to Ease Okhla Traffic

Delhi has cleared a major road infrastructure project aimed at easing congestion along the busy Maa Anandmayee Marg in South Delhi, with a proposed 5.5-km elevated corridor set to bypass around 12 major intersections.

The project was approved by the Unified Traffic and Transportation Infrastructure (Planning and Engineering) Centre (UTTIPEC) during its 70th governing body meeting. The proposed six-lane elevated corridor will connect the Outer Ring Road with the Mehrauli-Badarpur Road and is intended to improve traffic movement around the Okhla industrial areas.

The corridor is being planned against persistent congestion generated by traffic travelling to and from Okhla Phase I and Phase II. Officials said the elevated section would allow through-traffic to bypass multiple signalised intersections while reducing pressure on the existing road network.

An additional underpass and roundabout have also been approved near the Crowne Plaza intersection on Okhla Estate Marg. According to officials quoted by Hindustan Times, the proposed underpass would be around 550 metres long. The combined cost of the flyover and underpass is estimated at approximately ₹250 crore to ₹300 crore.

Traffic assessments indicate that the affected stretch handles roughly 10,000 to 12,000 vehicles per hour. Traffic from Okhla Phase I, Phase II and the Kalkaji Temple area converges around the Crowne Plaza junction, creating recurring bottlenecks.

The project also has an urban mobility component. By shifting a portion of vehicular movement onto the elevated corridor, authorities expect to create more opportunities for pedestrian and non-motorised transport infrastructure at ground level.

The latest approval is part of a wider push to improve Delhi’s multimodal transport network. UTTIPEC also cleared multimodal integration plans for six Delhi Metro stations: GTB Nagar, Sarita Vihar, Akshardham, Rohini West/Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital, Malviya Nagar and Shastri Park.

These station-area plans cover roughly 300 metres around each station and include pedestrian facilities, dedicated auto-rickshaw areas and designated pick-up and drop-off zones.

UTTIPEC also approved interventions at Mukarba Chowk, including widening an existing road overbridge on the Outer Ring Road from six lanes to 10 lanes and constructing a four-lane road overbridge connecting Jahangirpuri Industrial Area with Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar.

The new bridge is expected to divert around 20% of traffic currently passing through Mukarba Chowk, potentially reducing pressure on the junction and nearby National Highway 44.

Together, these projects highlight Delhi’s growing emphasis on combining road capacity expansion with last-mile connectivity and pedestrian infrastructure.
