The Tamil Nadu government has issued an order to set up a SIPCOT semiconductor industrial park at Maduramangalam at a cost of Rs 175 crore, which will provide employment to more than 5,000 people. The people of the Parandur and Ekanapuram regions have been protesting against the acquisition of agricultural land for the construction of the airport. In view of the long-standing demand of the people, the new government has officially announced the complete abandonment of the Parandur airport project. In such a situation, the government has come up with a new alternative scheme to boost industrial development in the region while protecting agricultural land. Accordingly, the government has ordered the setting up of a mega SIPCOT semiconductor and electronics manufacturing plant at a cost of Rs 175 crore.

The need for semiconductors is increasing on a daily basis due to the growing demand for electronic devices globally. The industrial park has been designed with the objective of attracting international investment to Tamil Nadu. The abandoned airport site will not only house state-of-the-art semiconductor facilities but also world-class R&D centres.

Steps have been taken to acquire about 410.80 acres (166.31.50 ha) of patta land in Maduramangalam and transfer ownership of 11.55 acres of Government Poramboke land in Maduramangalam for this project.

In the first phase, the Commissioner of Land Administration has issued a circular regarding 8.3820 hectares of land required for industrial use. It has been informed that all the land to be acquired is fallow, and the public can view maps and project details related to the land acquisition at the offices of the District Revenue Special Officer and Special Tahsildar on working days.

When fully operational, the project is expected to create 5,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities. The project is seen as a major step towards taking the state’s technological advancement to the next level while protecting the environment and agriculture.
