Kolkata Metro’s Purple Line Reaches Key Construction Milestone with Victoria Tunnel Breakthrough

Kolkata Metro has achieved a major engineering milestone with the successful breakthrough of Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) ‘Durga’ at the under construction Victoria Metro station. The achievement marks the completion of a crucial underground tunnel between Khidderpore and Victoria on the Purple Line, bringing one of the city’s most important metro projects a step closer to completion.

The breakthrough took place around 10.30 am, exactly one year after tunnelling began on 10 July 2025. The event was attended by senior officials from Metro Railway Kolkata, Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), Larsen & Toubro and other government agencies involved in the project. The successful completion of this underground section reflects the coordinated efforts of engineers, construction teams and project planners working on one of Kolkata’s most technically demanding infrastructure developments.

The Purple Line, also known as the Joka to Esplanade Metro corridor, is a key part of Kolkata’s expanding urban transport network. Once operational, it will connect the city’s southern suburbs with the central business district, improving access for thousands of daily commuters while reducing pressure on the road network. The corridor is expected to provide faster, safer and more reliable public transport across some of Kolkata’s busiest areas.

The tunnel breakthrough is particularly significant because it was completed beneath one of the city’s most sensitive urban zones without disrupting surface traffic or affecting nearby heritage structures.
