Bhogapuram Airport Opens New Aviation Gateway for North Andhra as Commercial Operations Begin

The Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport at Bhogapuram in Andhra Pradesh has begun commercial operations, marking a major addition to the state’s aviation infrastructure and creating a new gateway for North Andhra.

The greenfield airport, located in Vizianagaram district around 55 km from the existing Visakhapatnam Airport, began commercial flight operations on August 17, 2026. IndiGo operated the first commercial service from Hyderabad, marking the formal start of passenger operations at the new facility.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the airport on August 1. According to the Press Information Bureau, the airport was developed under the Public-Private Partnership model at a project cost of more than ₹5,640 crore and has been designed to handle around six million passengers annually.

The airport is being operated by GMR Visakhapatnam International Airport Limited. Its development is expected to strengthen air connectivity for Visakhapatnam and the wider North Andhra region while creating a platform for tourism, industrial activity and logistics growth.

The transition of commercial operations from the old Visakhapatnam Airport to Bhogapuram represents a significant change in the region’s aviation infrastructure. Air India announced that all its flights operating to and from Visakhapatnam would shift to the new airport from August 17 while retaining the VTZ airport code. The airline said it would continue to operate 14 weekly flights between Bhogapuram and Delhi.

The new terminal covers approximately 77,342 square metres and includes 22 traditional check-in counters, 18 self-baggage-drop units, advanced passenger-screening systems, baggage-handling infrastructure and seven aerobridges, according to Air India’s announcement.

Beyond passenger aviation, the airport is being positioned as part of a wider regional development strategy. The Andhra Pradesh government has identified the surrounding area as an emerging economic growth centre, with plans for urban, industrial and commercial development around Bhogapuram. Recent reporting has also highlighted proposals for an aerospace ecosystem adjoining the airport.

The infrastructure could therefore have implications beyond aviation. Better air connectivity can support business travel, tourism, logistics and investment while potentially increasing demand for commercial and residential development around the airport corridor.

The airport’s development also fits into Andhra Pradesh’s broader push to improve regional infrastructure and connectivity. The state government has been linking major infrastructure projects with industrial and economic development plans across North Andhra.

With commercial operations now underway, the next phase will focus on traffic growth, route expansion and the development of supporting infrastructure around the airport.

For the region, Bhogapuram is therefore not simply a new airport project. It represents a larger shift in the physical and economic infrastructure of North Andhra, with aviation serving as a potential catalyst for connectivity and investment.
