Andhra Pradesh’s new Bhogapuram International Airport has started handling commercial flights, with Air India shifting its Visakhapatnam operations to the new facility from August 17, 2026. The development marks an important step in expanding aviation infrastructure across North Andhra and improving the region’s connectivity with major Indian cities.
Officially named Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport, the facility is located at Bhogapuram in Vizianagaram district. It was inaugurated on August 1, 2026, and has been developed as a major aviation gateway for the region.
Air India shifts flights to the new airport
Air India announced that all its flights operating to and from Visakhapatnam International Airport would move to the new Bhogapuram facility from August 17. The airport continues to use the existing VTZ airport code.
The airline also confirmed that it would operate 14 weekly flights between Bhogapuram and Delhi, providing passengers with connections to other domestic and international destinations through its hubs.
The new terminal covers approximately 77,342 square metres. It includes 22 conventional check-in counters, 18 self-baggage drop units, modern security screening facilities and seven aerobridges.
These facilities are designed to improve passenger handling and support more efficient airport operations.
Why is Bhogapuram Airport important?
The airport’s importance extends beyond passenger travel. Improved aviation connectivity can support tourism, business travel, cargo movement and regional investment.
North Andhra has several economic and tourism destinations, including Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram and Srikakulam. Better airport access could make these locations more attractive to businesses and visitors.
The airport is also part of Andhra Pradesh’s wider infrastructure development plans, which include road connectivity, port modernisation and industrial investments.
The government has positioned the region as a potential coastal economic corridor, with aviation and maritime infrastructure expected to support wider economic activity.
What could it mean for regional development?
Airports can influence the development of surrounding areas by attracting hotels, logistics facilities, commercial properties and supporting businesses.
For Bhogapuram, improved connectivity could create opportunities in hospitality, transportation, warehousing and tourism-related services.
However, the scale of these benefits will depend on airline capacity, passenger demand, road connectivity and the development of supporting infrastructure.
The availability of flights is particularly important. Airport infrastructure alone cannot guarantee economic growth unless airlines operate sustainable routes and passenger traffic increases.
What challenges remain?
The airport’s long-term success will depend on passenger growth, airline network expansion, cargo-handling capacity and efficient connectivity with nearby economic centres.
The development of surrounding roads and public transport will also influence how easily passengers can reach the airport.
Another important factor will be the ability to attract additional domestic and international airline services.
The bigger picture
Bhogapuram Airport represents a significant addition to Andhra Pradesh’s aviation infrastructure.
Its transition from an inaugurated project to an operating commercial airport creates opportunities for North Andhra’s tourism, business and logistics sectors.
The next milestone will be turning this new aviation capacity into sustained passenger traffic, stronger airline connectivity and wider regional economic development.
