BHUBANESWAR, October 31, 2026: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has inaugurated a ₹169-crore data centre and a Cybersecurity Training Institute in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, marking a significant investment in India’s financial technology infrastructure.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the facilities on October 25 at Info Valley-II in Jatni, near Bhubaneswar. Spread across 18.55 acres, the campus is designed to strengthen the technological capabilities, cybersecurity preparedness and operational resilience of India’s financial system.
The data centre will host mission-critical payment and settlement systems, along with other important RBI technology initiatives.
Data centre to support critical payment infrastructure
The new facility is expected to support essential financial infrastructure, including systems responsible for processing and settling electronic transactions.
Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) and National Electronic Funds Transfer (NEFT) are among the important payment systems associated with the RBI’s operations.
These systems play a central role in India’s banking ecosystem by enabling the movement of funds between individuals, businesses and financial institutions.
As digital transactions increase, financial institutions require secure computing facilities capable of handling large volumes of data and maintaining uninterrupted operations.
The Bhubaneswar facility is intended to strengthen this technological foundation by providing secure, scalable and resilient computing infrastructure.
Why Odisha was selected
The facility is located at Info Valley-II in Jatni, near Bhubaneswar.
According to reporting by Financial Express, geographical stability was an important consideration in selecting the location. Its distance from seismically active zones and high-risk international border areas was also cited as a factor.
The location adds another major financial technology facility to Odisha’s growing technology infrastructure ecosystem.
The new centre is expected to complement the RBI’s existing data centre in Navi Mumbai.
Cybersecurity Training Institute to develop technology expertise
Alongside the data centre, the RBI has established a Cybersecurity Training Institute to strengthen technology capabilities across the financial sector.
The institute is expected to focus on cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, data science, cloud computing and enterprise technology.
The initiative comes at a time when banks and financial institutions increasingly depend on digital platforms for customer services, payments and internal operations.
Cybersecurity training can help develop the expertise required to identify vulnerabilities, manage digital risks and protect financial systems against cyber threats.
However, detailed operational timelines and annual training capacity have not yet been specified in the available reporting.
Implications for India’s digital infrastructure sector
The development highlights the growing importance of data centres as critical national infrastructure.
Modern financial services depend on reliable data storage, computing capacity, network connectivity and cybersecurity systems.
The expansion of digital payments, online banking and financial technology platforms is increasing demand for facilities capable of supporting secure and continuous operations.
Data centre development also creates opportunities for companies involved in power management, cooling systems, construction, network equipment, cybersecurity and technology services.
For Odisha, the RBI campus adds to the state’s technology infrastructure and could support the development of specialised digital services.
What comes next?
The long-term impact of the facility will depend on its operational deployment, technology upgrades and integration with the RBI’s wider digital infrastructure.
Its inauguration represents an important step towards strengthening the technological backbone of India’s financial system.
As financial services become increasingly digital, investments in secure and resilient data infrastructure will remain essential to the country’s economic development.
