Flash Flood Risk Rises Across Parts of India: Are Urban Infrastructure Systems Ready?

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of flash floods in several parts of central India. The current risk of flash flooding ranges from low to moderate.

The regions at risk include Chhattisgarh, eastern Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and Odisha. Heavy rainfall can cause sudden flooding in these areas.

The soil in many central parts of the country is already wet, so additional rainfall can quickly lead to waterlogging and flooding. The IMD expects more rainfall across central and northern India in the coming days, suggesting that the ongoing monsoon period could bring intense spells of rain. Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat are among the areas where heavy rainfall is expected.

Many parts of Haryana, Delhi, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Uttarakhand are also expected to receive widespread rainfall.

Heavy rainfall has already affected Delhi-NCR, and the IMD has advised authorities to closely monitor low-lying areas and flood-prone locations.

Continuous rainfall can lead to waterlogging and localised flooding. For cities, this can put additional pressure on roads, drainage systems, and other critical infrastructure.
