India is set to enter a new phase of sustainable railway infrastructure with the launch of its first indigenous hydrogen-powered passenger train on the Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana. Scheduled to begin operations on 17 July, the project marks a significant step in Indian Railways’ efforts to reduce carbon emissions and adopt cleaner propulsion technologies across its network.
The hydrogen train represents one of the country’s most ambitious green mobility initiatives. Unlike conventional diesel locomotives, hydrogen-powered trains generate electricity through fuel cells, producing only water vapour as a by-product. The technology offers a cleaner alternative for routes where full electrification may not be immediately feasible while supporting India’s broader commitment to decarbonising its transport sector.
The inaugural service will operate under the Northern Railway zone, connecting Jind and Sonipat in Haryana. The project has been developed using indigenous engineering capabilities, reflecting the government’s focus on strengthening domestic innovation in railway technology and sustainable infrastructure.
Hydrogen propulsion is increasingly being explored worldwide as countries seek to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. While electric rail remains the preferred option for high-density routes, hydrogen trains provide an efficient solution for regional and non-electrified corridors where installing overhead electrification can be costly or technically challenging.
For India’s infrastructure ecosystem, the hydrogen train extends beyond passenger transport. It requires the development of an entirely new support network that includes hydrogen production facilities, storage systems, fuelling stations, maintenance workshops and specialised safety infrastructure. These investments create opportunities for engineering companies, industrial gas suppliers, equipment manufacturers and clean energy developers.
The initiative also complements Indian Railways’ wider programme to modernise its operations through complete network electrification, station redevelopment, high-speed corridors and digital signalling systems. Together, these projects are transforming one of the world’s largest railway networks into a more efficient and environmentally responsible transport system.
Industry experts believe hydrogen-powered mobility could play an important role in India’s long-term transport strategy as demand for low-emission infrastructure continues to rise. The experience gained from this pilot project may help shape future deployment across selected regional routes if operational performance and lifecycle costs meet expectations.
The launch also supports India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission, which aims to position the country as a global hub for hydrogen production and clean energy technologies. Railway applications could become one of several sectors adopting hydrogen alongside heavy industry, shipping and long-distance freight transport.
For the construction and infrastructure sectors, hydrogen mobility creates demand for new industrial assets, including production plants, pipelines, storage facilities and transport logistics. As the hydrogen economy expands, supporting infrastructure will become a critical area of investment alongside renewable energy generation.
Although electrification remains the backbone of Indian Railways’ sustainability strategy, hydrogen-powered trains offer an additional solution for improving environmental performance across sections of the network that are difficult to electrify. Successful implementation could encourage wider adoption of hydrogen technologies across public transport systems.
As India’s first hydrogen train prepares for commercial service, the project signals the country’s growing commitment to combining infrastructure development with clean energy innovation. The launch represents not only a technological milestone for Indian Railways but also an important step towards building a greener and more resilient transport ecosystem.
