Dholera International Airport Review Signals Fresh Push for India’s Next Global Industrial Hub

India’s ambitions to build world-class industrial infrastructure received another boost as the Union Civil Aviation Minister reviewed the progress of Dholera International Airport in Gujarat. The review underlined the airport’s strategic role in supporting the Dholera Special Investment Region (SIR), a flagship industrial city being developed as part of the Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC). Officials highlighted that the airport is expected to become a key catalyst for manufacturing, aerospace, logistics and export-led growth in western India.

During the site inspection, senior officials from the Ministry of Civil Aviation, the Airports Authority of India and the Dholera International Airport project assessed construction milestones and discussed the roadmap for timely completion. The airport is being developed to handle both passenger and cargo operations, creating an integrated transport gateway for industries operating within Dholera SIR and neighbouring manufacturing clusters.

Located around 100 kilometres from Ahmedabad, Dholera has been planned as India’s first greenfield smart industrial city under the Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor programme. The region is being equipped with advanced infrastructure including smart utilities, industrial zones, high-capacity road networks and digital connectivity to attract global manufacturers across sectors such as semiconductors, electronics, defence, renewable energy and engineering.

The upcoming airport is expected to strengthen multimodal connectivity by integrating with expressways, rail infrastructure and industrial logistics corridors. Efficient air cargo services are likely to improve supply chains for high-value manufacturing industries, enabling faster movement of components and finished products to domestic and international markets. Industry experts believe such connectivity will make Dholera increasingly attractive for export-oriented businesses seeking reliable logistics infrastructure.

The airport also complements several major investments currently taking shape across Gujarat. The state has emerged as one of India’s fastest-growing manufacturing destinations through continued investment in industrial parks, petrochemicals, semiconductor manufacturing and renewable energy projects. Recent infrastructure announcements, including new semiconductor facilities and refinery investments, further reinforce Gujarat’s position as a strategic industrial hub.

Government officials noted that Dholera International Airport is expected to support future aerospace manufacturing, maintenance services and aviation-related industries alongside traditional industrial development. As industrial production expands within the Special Investment Region, dedicated cargo handling capabilities will become increasingly important for businesses operating global supply chains.

The airport’s development is also expected to generate wider economic benefits across the surrounding region. Improved connectivity typically encourages commercial development, warehousing, logistics parks, hospitality projects and residential expansion, creating new employment opportunities while supporting regional urbanisation. Businesses that rely on efficient transport infrastructure are expected to benefit from reduced transit times and improved access to international markets.
