Indian Railways has approved a ₹493 crore project to double the 49-km Adipur-Bhuj railway line in Gujarat’s Kutch region.
The Adipur-Bhuj route is currently a single railway line, which limits the number of trains that can run on the section.
The project will add a second railway track, allowing trains to move in both directions at the same time. The new track is expected to reduce congestion and improve train operations on the route.
The project will allow two additional passenger train services in each direction every day. More train services will improve connectivity for people living in Bhuj, Adipur, Gandhidham, and nearby areas in Kutch.
The doubled railway line will support an additional 12 million tonnes of freight every year. Better freight capacity will help move goods faster and strengthen logistics in western Gujarat.
The railway project is important because several other rail projects are being developed in the Kutch region. These include: Bhuj-Naliya gauge conversion, Naliya-Vayor line extension, New rail links connecting Naliya, Jakhau, Lakhpat, and Luna.
These projects are expected to increase both passenger and freight traffic in the coming years. Railway officials estimate that line utilisation on the corridor could reach 123% by 2029-30, showing the need for additional capacity. The doubling project will help decongest the route and improve the reliability of train services.
Kutch has become an important industrial and logistics hub because of its ports, industries, and growing economic activity. Better rail infrastructure is expected to support this growth. The project is also expected to generate additional revenue for Indian Railways through increased passenger and freight movement.
