Chennai is strengthening its position as an important destination for data centre infrastructure, with Indian multinational conglomerate Larsen & Toubro (L&T) beginning construction of a new 52 MW data centre in the city.
The project is being developed by L&T’s digital infrastructure business, Vyoma.AI. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on 28 October 2026 at the company’s existing campus in Kancheepuram, Chennai.
The new facility will add 52 MW of capacity to the existing 30 MW data centre at the campus, taking the combined capacity to 82 MW. The campus also has 150 MVA of power infrastructure readiness to support its computing operations.
The expansion is part of Vyoma.AI’s larger ambition to develop more than 250 MW of data centre capacity across India.
Advanced AI Computing and Cooling Technology
The new facility will provide computing infrastructure for artificial intelligence (AI), supporting the development, training and deployment of advanced AI models.
It will support demanding AI workloads, including model training, inference and fine-tuning. The facility will also feature direct-to-chip liquid cooling technology to manage the heat generated by high-performance computing systems.
Alongside advanced cooling systems, the data centre will incorporate renewable energy and energy-efficient technologies to reduce its environmental impact and manage power consumption.
L&T’s Partnership with Together AI
The expansion follows L&T’s announcement in August 2026 that its AI infrastructure subsidiary, LTN Compute, had secured a major contract to build an AI Factory for US-based AI cloud company Together AI.
Under the project, the Chennai campus will house 10,000 NVIDIA B300 GPUs. These powerful processors will support AI training, inference and fine-tuning workloads.
L&T has classified the contract as a mega order, placing its value in the range of ₹10,000 crore to ₹15,000 crore.
Separately, in February 2026, L&T announced a proposed partnership with NVIDIA under the IndiaAI Mission to develop gigawatt-scale AI Factory infrastructure in India. The initiative aims to strengthen the country’s ability to develop and deploy advanced AI models and applications domestically.
Why Does This Expansion Matter?
The rapid growth of AI applications is increasing the demand for powerful computing infrastructure. Data centres provide the processing power, storage and networking capabilities required to develop and operate advanced AI systems.
By expanding its data centre capacity, L&T aims to strengthen India’s domestic AI infrastructure and support businesses that require high-performance computing services.
Developing AI infrastructure within India could also reduce dependence on overseas computing facilities and support greater control over domestic data and digital services.
Vyoma.AI’s Future Plans
Vyoma.AI aims to establish more than 250 MW of data centre capacity across India. Its planned services will cover several areas of digital infrastructure, including:
Sovereign cloud platforms: Cloud services designed to keep data and computing infrastructure under Indian control.
GPU-as-a-Service: Businesses will be able to access and rent powerful graphics processing units (GPUs) without purchasing the hardware themselves.
Hyperscale colocation: Large-scale data centre facilities where businesses can house their servers and IT infrastructure.
Mission-critical digital infrastructure: Technology infrastructure designed to support essential business and government operations.
With this expansion, L&T is looking to strengthen its position in India’s growing AI infrastructure market as demand for computing capacity continues to increase.
