Global luxury brands such as Versace, Michael Kors and Jimmy Choo are taking strong action against fake products in India by hiring secret investigators to identify people selling counterfeit luxury goods.
The investigators pose as ordinary customers so that sellers do not become suspicious. Their job is to visit markets, speak to sellers and gather information about fake luxury products.
Once these investigators find evidence of counterfeit products, they report it to the luxury brands.
The brands then use this information to file legal complaints against those selling counterfeit goods and work with the police. In May this year, Versace discovered a major supplier of fake products in East Delhi through one of its secret investigators.
The seller was supplying fake Versace products worth several lakh rupees every month. According to the investigation, the counterfeit products were being distributed to several sellers across Delhi.
After receiving the information, Versace filed a complaint against the seller, following which the police carried out raids. Officers collected evidence during the investigation, and an FIR (First Information Report) was registered against the accused.
The police also seized a large quantity of counterfeit Versace products. According to people familiar with the case, the investigation began after a tip-off from one of the brand’s secret investigators.
Luxury companies are now placing greater focus on protecting their trademarks and copyrights by investing more in anti-counterfeiting measures. Instead of relying only on lawyers, they are building networks of undercover investigators across India.
These investigators help brands identify where fake products are manufactured, stored and sold. The growing presence of counterfeit luxury goods in India’s major metro cities has become a serious concern.
Many counterfeit products now closely resemble genuine luxury items, making it difficult for buyers to tell the difference. The increasing market for fake luxury goods has become a major challenge for global fashion brands.
Counterfeit products harm a brand’s reputation and reduce sales of genuine products. They can also mislead consumers into believing they are purchasing authentic luxury items.
Secret investigators help brands track the entire supply chain of counterfeit goods. They identify wholesalers, distributors and retailers involved in selling fake products.
The information collected by these investigators enables brands to take legal action more quickly, while the police can use the evidence to conduct raids and seize counterfeit goods.
Luxury brands believe that using undercover investigators is one of the most effective ways to tackle counterfeiting. As the counterfeit market continues to grow in India, more global luxury companies are expected to strengthen their anti-counterfeiting efforts.
