Maharashtra Clears Detailed Study for Palghar Offshore Airport Project

The Maharashtra government has approved a detailed study for the proposed Palghar offshore airport, marking an important step towards expanding aviation infrastructure in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has cleared the proposal to examine the technical, financial and environmental feasibility of building an airport off the coast of Palghar. The project is expected to support the region’s growing air travel demand while reducing pressure on Mumbai’s existing airport network.

The proposed airport forms part of the state’s long term infrastructure strategy to improve regional connectivity and prepare for rising passenger traffic over the coming decades. With Mumbai’s air traffic continuing to increase and the Navi Mumbai International Airport nearing completion, planners are already exploring additional capacity to meet future requirements.

Officials said the detailed study will assess various aspects of the offshore airport, including engineering requirements, environmental impact, construction methods, financial viability and operational feasibility. The Maharashtra government believes that expanding aviation infrastructure will strengthen economic growth across the region. Better airport capacity is expected to attract investment, improve tourism, support cargo movement and generate employment during both construction and operations.

The proposed airport could also improve connectivity for northern parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, including Palghar, Vasai and surrounding industrial areas. Improved air links may encourage new business parks, logistics hubs and commercial developments, supporting the state’s broader economic objectives.

Infrastructure experts note that the detailed study does not guarantee construction but represents an essential milestone in project planning. Large aviation projects require comprehensive technical and environmental assessments before final approvals are granted.
