The North Western Railway has closed FY26 with its highest-ever revenue, reflecting a steady rise in both passenger and freight traffic even as it undertakes an extensive modernisation programme across its network.
Officials said earnings touched ₹8,622 crore during the year, supported by improved occupancy and higher freight loading. The performance comes alongside an accelerated push to upgrade passenger-facing infrastructure under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, with 77 stations currently under redevelopment across key locations including Jaipur and Jaisalmer.
The focus has not been limited to aesthetics. Railway authorities point to near-complete electrification of the broad gauge network in the zone, which now stands at about 99 per cent, as well as the gradual rollout of safety systems such as Kavach. Together, these measures are aimed at improving operational efficiency while reducing dependence on conventional fuel.
The dual track of capacity augmentation and service modernisation signals a broader shift within the railways. Revenue growth is increasingly being tied to infrastructure quality and network reliability, rather than mere expansion. As station redevelopment gathers pace, the challenge will be to ensure that upgrades translate into measurable gains in passenger experience and throughput, not just visual transformation.
