Efforts to extend road connectivity into the remote Abujhmarh region of Chhattisgarh have accelerated, with more than 250 km of roads now laid across one of the country’s most inaccessible and conflict-affected terrains. The push is part of a broader strategy to improve state presence in areas long marked by isolation and limited administrative reach.
Officials say the new road network has begun to ease access for security forces and enable the delivery of welfare services, including healthcare and ration supplies, to previously cut-off habitations. For residents, improved connectivity is slowly altering access to markets, education and basic services that remained out of reach for decades.
Yet the final stretch remains complex. Difficult terrain, dense forest cover and intermittent security concerns continue to slow progress in several pockets. Contractors and officials on the ground point to logistical constraints that make construction both time-consuming and cost-intensive.
The expansion also underscores the role of infrastructure as an instrument of state policy in Left Wing Extremism-affected regions. Roads are not only about mobility here but also about integrating local economies with the mainstream and strengthening governance in areas where it has historically been weak.
Questions, however, remain over sustainability and maintenance. Building roads in such terrain is only the first step. Ensuring their upkeep, especially through monsoon cycles and in areas with limited administrative capacity, will be critical to preserving the gains made so far.
As the network inches forward, the Abujhmarh project illustrates both the potential and the limits of infrastructure-led development in regions where geography and security continue to shape outcomes.
