India’s Smart Cities Mission is entering its final phase, with a majority of projects across selected cities nearing completion. The mission, launched to improve urban infrastructure and quality of life, is now approaching a key milestone.
Officials indicated that a large number of projects related to mobility, digital infrastructure, water supply and urban services have been completed, while remaining works are in advanced stages. Several cities have reported over 80 to 90 per cent completion of planned initiatives.
The mission focuses on area-based development and pan-city solutions, aiming to create efficient, sustainable and citizen-friendly urban spaces. Projects include smart roads, integrated command and control centres, waste management systems and improved public transport infrastructure.
Focus shifts to digital systems and long-term urban sustainability
As the mission moves towards completion, emphasis is being placed on operational efficiency and long-term sustainability of the infrastructure created. Cities are working on maintaining digital systems such as surveillance networks, traffic management platforms and public service delivery tools.
Infrastructure experts have noted that while physical infrastructure is important, the effectiveness of smart city projects depends on how well these systems are managed and integrated into daily urban operations.
The mission has also played a role in encouraging the use of technology in governance, including real-time data monitoring and improved service delivery mechanisms. These advancements are expected to enhance urban planning and decision-making processes.
However, experts have pointed out that challenges remain in terms of scalability, funding and coordination between multiple agencies. Ensuring that the benefits of smart city initiatives reach a wider population will be a key focus going forward.
As India’s urban population continues to grow, the outcomes of the Smart Cities Mission are expected to influence future urban development strategies. The final phase marks an important transition from project execution to long-term management and impact assessment.
