India’s digital infrastructure is set for another major boost after HCLTech announced plans to invest up to ₹3,500 crore in AI-focused data centres. The company aims to develop facilities with capacities of up to 50 MW, supporting the growing demand for sovereign AI infrastructure from enterprises, governments and regulated industries across the country.
The investment reflects the rapid evolution of India’s digital economy, where artificial intelligence, cloud computing and data localisation are driving unprecedented demand for modern data centre capacity. As organisations increasingly deploy AI applications, they require secure, scalable and high-performance infrastructure capable of processing massive volumes of data while meeting regulatory requirements.
HCLTech’s proposed facilities are expected to cater to customers looking for AI-ready computing environments with improved data security and lower latency. The move also aligns with India’s broader vision of building domestic digital infrastructure that supports strategic sectors such as banking, healthcare, manufacturing, telecom and public services.
The announcement comes at a time when India’s electricity demand is rising alongside the expansion of AI workloads and hyperscale data centres. According to the Ministry of Power, peak electricity demand is projected to reach around 300 GW next year, driven in part by data centres, electric vehicles and wider industrial growth. The government is simultaneously accelerating investments in renewable energy, grid infrastructure and energy storage to support this increasing demand.
Industry experts believe AI infrastructure will become one of the country’s most important growth drivers over the next decade. Beyond computing capacity, data centres create opportunities across construction, engineering, power infrastructure, cooling technologies, fibre connectivity and renewable energy integration.
India is already witnessing strong momentum in this sector, with technology companies and infrastructure developers announcing large-scale investments across multiple states. Market studies estimate that India’s data centre ecosystem could create an opportunity worth nearly US$90 billion by FY35, extending well beyond server facilities into power systems, equipment manufacturing, connectivity and specialised services.
For the construction and infrastructure sector, projects of this scale generate demand for specialised buildings with high structural resilience, advanced cooling systems, uninterrupted power supply, backup energy solutions and sophisticated security infrastructure. Every new AI-ready campus also requires supporting investments in substations, transmission networks, water management and transport connectivity.
As India positions itself as a global destination for AI innovation, digital infrastructure is becoming as critical as highways, airports and industrial corridors. Data centres are increasingly viewed as national infrastructure assets that support economic competitiveness, digital sovereignty and future technological advancement.
HCLTech’s latest investment signals growing confidence in India’s AI ecosystem while reinforcing the country’s ambition to become a leading digital infrastructure hub. With demand for AI computing expected to accelerate across industries, investments in data centres are likely to remain a defining theme in India’s infrastructure landscape over the coming years.
