Bhogapuram Airport Set to Boost North Andhra’s Infrastructure Growth

North Andhra Pradesh is preparing for a major infrastructure milestone as the Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport at Bhogapuram is scheduled to be inaugurated on August 1. Built in nearly 31 months at an investment of around ₹4,727 crore, the greenfield airport is expected to improve regional connectivity, strengthen logistics and create new opportunities for industry, tourism and exports.

Developed in Vizianagaram district under a public-private partnership model, the airport has been designed to handle six million passengers annually in its first phase. The facility can be expanded to accommodate up to 40 million passengers in the future, giving it the capacity to support long-term economic growth across the region.

Spread across nearly 2,700 acres, the airport includes a modern passenger terminal, a dedicated cargo terminal and a runway capable of handling wide-body aircraft. The cargo infrastructure is expected to benefit exporters by improving the movement of agricultural produce, seafood, pharmaceuticals and manufactured goods from North Andhra to domestic and international markets.

The Andhra Pradesh government has also invested more than ₹1,500 crore in supporting infrastructure, including road connectivity and public utilities around the airport. These investments are intended to create an integrated transport ecosystem that supports commercial development and attracts new industries to the region.

The airport is expected to improve access to Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram and Srikakulam while supporting tourism along Andhra Pradesh’s coastline. Faster air connectivity could encourage investments in hospitality, logistics parks, warehousing and commercial real estate, creating fresh business opportunities across multiple sectors.

Officials also see the airport as a catalyst for future aviation-related developments. Plans include an aviation hub and a university in the surrounding area, helping develop skilled manpower while creating an ecosystem for aerospace, maintenance services and aviation training.

The project has been designed with sustainability in mind, incorporating energy-efficient features and architectural elements inspired by the region’s cultural identity. This reflects the growing emphasis on combining modern infrastructure with environmentally responsible development.

India has witnessed significant investment in airports over the past decade as demand for air travel continues to grow. New airports are increasingly being viewed as economic assets that stimulate industrial development, improve regional connectivity and generate employment beyond aviation services.

For North Andhra, Bhogapuram Airport is expected to become more than a transport hub. By improving passenger movement, supporting exports and encouraging new investment, it is likely to play an important role in the region’s long-term infrastructure and economic development.
