India’s digital infrastructure sector is set for one of its biggest investments after RMZ and Colt Data Centres announced plans to jointly develop a 1.25 GW data centre campus in Andhra Pradesh with an investment of around ₹1.77 lakh crore. The project has received approval from the Andhra Pradesh government’s State Investment Promotion Committee (SIPC) and will be developed at Anandapuram in Visakhapatnam district.
The proposed campus will be built on nearly 200 acres of land identified at Jagnadhapuram village in Visakhapatnam district. Once completed, it is expected to become one of the largest data centre developments in India and strengthen the country’s position as a major destination for digital infrastructure investments.
The project reflects the rapid growth of India’s data centre industry, which is witnessing strong demand from cloud computing, artificial intelligence, digital payments, e-commerce and enterprise technology services. As businesses continue shifting towards digital platforms, the need for secure and scalable data storage facilities has increased significantly.
For Andhra Pradesh, the investment is expected to create a new digital infrastructure hub on the east coast. Besides attracting technology companies, the project is likely to generate employment during construction and operations while supporting demand for power infrastructure, fibre connectivity, logistics, engineering services and commercial real estate.
Data centres have become a critical part of modern infrastructure as they support cloud services, AI applications, financial transactions, government platforms and digital public services. Large facilities also encourage investments in renewable energy, advanced cooling systems and high-capacity power networks to ensure uninterrupted operations.
Industry reports suggest India is emerging as one of the fastest-growing data centre markets globally. Rising internet usage, data localisation requirements and growing AI adoption are encouraging domestic and international investors to expand capacity across the country. The sector is expected to attract billions of dollars in fresh investment over the coming decade.
Visakhapatnam is increasingly being viewed as an attractive destination for digital infrastructure because of its coastal location, improving connectivity and availability of industrial land. The city already has access to submarine cable connectivity and is expected to play a larger role in supporting cloud and AI infrastructure in the coming years.
The RMZ-Colt partnership also highlights growing collaboration between real estate developers and global data centre operators to meet rising digital demand. As India’s digital economy expands, investments of this scale are expected to strengthen supporting infrastructure across power, telecom, construction and engineering sectors.
The project marks another major step in India’s ambition to become a global hub for digital infrastructure. Along with expanding data storage capacity, it is expected to support innovation, improve technology services and contribute to long-term economic growth through large-scale infrastructure development.
