India’s regional aviation network is entering a new phase of expansion following the launch of the Modified UDAN scheme, reinforcing the country’s commitment to improving air connectivity and supporting economic growth through modern airport infrastructure. The updated programme aims to connect 120 additional destinations across the country, extending the benefits of affordable air travel to more cities and underserved regions.
Since its introduction, the UDAN initiative has transformed regional aviation by making air travel accessible to millions of passengers while encouraging investment in airport infrastructure. The modified scheme builds on this foundation with a larger financial commitment of ₹28,840 crore, supporting new routes, upgraded terminals and improved aviation facilities that can accommodate rising passenger demand.
Airport infrastructure has become a vital pillar of India’s wider development strategy. Beyond serving travellers, airports stimulate investment in tourism, manufacturing, logistics, hospitality and commercial real estate. Improved regional connectivity also enables businesses to reach new markets, strengthens trade links and creates employment opportunities across multiple sectors.
A recent example of this momentum is the inauguration of the new terminal building at Jodhpur Airport. Built at a cost of approximately ₹480 crore, the modern facility has the capacity to handle around two million passengers annually. The terminal reflects the growing emphasis on building airports that combine operational efficiency with improved passenger experience while supporting future traffic growth.
The expansion is not limited to major cities. The Modified UDAN scheme seeks to improve connectivity in Tier II and Tier III locations by bringing more airports, heliports and water aerodromes into the national aviation network. Better regional links can reduce travel times, encourage investment and improve access to education, healthcare and business opportunities for communities that have historically depended on road or rail transport.
Infrastructure development around airports is equally important. Modern terminals require efficient road access, public transport, utilities and logistics support to maximise their economic impact. Integrated planning helps create aviation hubs that serve as gateways for both passenger movement and cargo operations, contributing to regional development and supply chain efficiency.
The aviation sector is also becoming increasingly technology driven. Digital check in systems, automated baggage handling, advanced air traffic management and energy efficient terminal designs are helping airports improve operational performance while reducing environmental impact. These innovations are expected to play a larger role as passenger numbers continue to rise across the country.
India’s aviation ambitions align with its broader infrastructure vision, where airports are developed alongside highways, rail corridors and logistics networks to create seamless multimodal connectivity. This integrated approach supports faster movement of people and goods while strengthening the country’s competitiveness in both domestic and international markets.
As investment continues across the aviation ecosystem, regional airports are expected to become important centres for economic activity rather than simply transport facilities. The combination of modern infrastructure, wider connectivity and supportive government policies positions the sector for sustained growth over the coming years.
With the Modified UDAN scheme expanding the reach of affordable air travel and new airport projects enhancing regional capacity, India’s aviation infrastructure is steadily becoming a catalyst for inclusive development, stronger connectivity and long term economic progress.
