The Uttar Pradesh government has approved its new Data Centre Policy 2026, marking one of India’s biggest digital infrastructure initiatives in recent years. The policy aims to attract investments exceeding ₹2 lakh crore while creating more than 2 GW of new data centre capacity, positioning the state as a leading destination for AI ready and environmentally sustainable digital infrastructure. The new framework replaces the previous policy and reflects the growing demand for facilities that can support artificial intelligence, cloud computing, fintech, e-commerce and next generation digital services.
Unlike traditional infrastructure projects focused on roads or bridges, data centres have become critical assets for the digital economy. They power everything from online banking and digital payments to healthcare systems, smart cities, streaming platforms and enterprise cloud services. As businesses continue to generate larger volumes of data, demand for secure, energy efficient and scalable digital infrastructure is rising rapidly across India.
The latest policy seeks to create an ecosystem that encourages both domestic and international investment. Along with promoting new facilities, it places emphasis on green technologies, renewable energy integration and AI compatible infrastructure. These features are becoming increasingly important as data centres require significant power capacity while businesses also seek to reduce their environmental footprint.
For the infrastructure sector, the impact extends well beyond technology companies. Large scale data centre campuses stimulate investment across multiple industries, including construction, electrical engineering, cooling systems, renewable energy, telecom networks and real estate. Every new facility generates demand for specialised equipment, skilled labour and supporting infrastructure, creating long term economic value.
Uttar Pradesh has steadily emerged as one of India’s fastest growing digital infrastructure markets. Its proximity to the National Capital Region, expanding fibre connectivity and improving power infrastructure have attracted increasing interest from technology companies and global investors. The new policy is expected to further strengthen this position by offering a clear roadmap for future investment and capacity expansion.
Artificial intelligence is another major driver behind the policy. AI applications require enormous computing power, high performance servers and low latency networks, all of which depend on advanced data centres. As India accelerates AI adoption across manufacturing, healthcare, education, logistics and financial services, digital infrastructure will become as important as physical infrastructure in supporting economic growth.
The initiative also complements India’s broader infrastructure strategy, which increasingly integrates digital assets alongside highways, airports, ports and industrial corridors. Future economic competitiveness will rely not only on efficient transport networks but also on the ability to process, store and secure massive amounts of digital information.
Industry experts believe the policy could encourage global hyperscale operators, cloud service providers and technology firms to expand their presence in India. The resulting investment would strengthen the country’s digital ecosystem while supporting employment, innovation and regional economic development.
As India moves towards becoming a global digital economy, infrastructure is evolving beyond concrete and steel. Modern data centres are becoming the backbone of commerce, governance and innovation. Uttar Pradesh’s latest policy signals how states are competing to build the next generation of infrastructure that will power India’s digital future.
