Global tech giant Meta and Indian conglomerate Reliance Industries have recently partnered to develop an AI-ready data centre in India. The project marks a major step forward in the growing relationship between the two companies.
The new AI data centre will be built in Jamnagar, with Reliance developing the facility in collaboration with the Gujarat government. Meta will lease and use the facility for its own AI operations. The first phase of the project is estimated to have a capacity of around 168 megawatts (MW). The project is also expected to expand further in the near future.
The facility is expected to be large and powerful, with enough energy capacity to power nearly 150,000 homes. The Jamnagar site was chosen because it already has access to power, water, and strong infrastructure. Meanwhile, Reliance can also benefit from its existing facilities in the region.
India as an Emerging AI Infrastructure Hub
India has recently been attracting major investments in AI and data centres. With global tech giants such as Amazon, Microsoft, and Google also expanding their data centre presence in the country, the Indian government is offering tax benefits to encourage companies to use local data centres.
It is worth noting that Meta and Reliance already share strong ties, with Meta investing USD 5.7 billion in Jio Platforms in 2020. Moreover, the two companies formed a joint venture last year to develop AI tools for businesses using Meta’s Llama AI models.
Industry experts say the partnership works well because Reliance has strong infrastructure capabilities, while Meta brings advanced AI expertise.
Data Centre Market to Grow Rapidly
India’s data centre market is expected to nearly double to USD 13.1 billion by 2034. This growth will be driven by digital services, cloud computing, and the increasing adoption of AI technologies.
As AI technology continues to gain momentum, the deal demonstrates how India is gradually transforming into an important destination for AI and digital infrastructure investments. At the same time, it highlights the growing importance of data centres in supporting the next generation of AI services and applications.
