India’s highway network is entering a new digital phase as the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has launched a framework to share infrastructure and operational data with premier government research institutions. The initiative aims to accelerate innovation in transport engineering, improve road safety and enable data driven planning for future highway projects.
Under the new framework, leading technical institutions will gain access to a wide range of highway related datasets, including traffic volumes, toll collection patterns, road conditions, infrastructure performance and operational metrics. Researchers will be able to analyse this information to develop advanced solutions for traffic management, predictive maintenance, intelligent transport systems and sustainable infrastructure planning.
The move reflects the government’s broader strategy of integrating technology into national infrastructure development.
