The Uttar Pradesh government is moving ahead with plans to expand several highways to reduce traffic congestion, improve road connectivity, make travel faster and safer, and support trade and business across the state.
Under the proposal, the Lucknow-Sitapur Highway, which currently has four lanes, will be widened to six lanes. The expansion is expected to ease congestion on the route and reduce travel time between Lucknow and Sitapur.
The Barabanki-Bahraich Highway will be upgraded from two lanes to four lanes. The wider road will improve connectivity to the Nepal border and help speed up the movement of goods and commercial traffic.
The Jhansi-Orai Highway, which currently has four lanes, is also set to be widened to six lanes. The project is expected to improve connectivity to the Bundelkhand region and provide a smoother journey for motorists.
Similarly, the Orai-Bara Highway will be expanded from four lanes to six lanes. The upgrade is expected to improve the movement of heavy vehicles and reduce travel time.
One of the key reasons this project is expected to move ahead more quickly is that much of the required land is already owned by the government. This is likely to reduce delays linked to land acquisition. Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) are currently being prepared before construction begins.
The upgraded highways will include wider carriageways, new flyovers at busy junctions, underpasses to improve traffic flow, and bypasses to separate local village traffic from highway traffic.
The expansion is expected to benefit commuters by reducing travel time, easing congestion, improving road safety and making the transport of goods more efficient.
Businesses are also expected to benefit through faster deliveries, improved logistics and stronger trade links, particularly along the Barabanki-Bahraich route, which connects towards the Nepal border. The improved road network could also encourage further commercial activity along these corridors.
The highway expansion is also likely to have a positive impact on the property market. Better road connectivity often attracts new housing developments, schools, shopping centres and commercial projects. Areas near new flyovers and bypasses could also see increased real estate activity.
Once the Detailed Project Reports are completed, tenders will be issued and construction work will begin. Under the proposal, three highways will be widened to six lanes, while one highway will be upgraded to four lanes. The project aims to improve connectivity, reduce congestion, support trade and contribute to economic growth across Uttar Pradesh.
