India’s digital infrastructure sector is set for a major boost after Australia-based data centre operator AirTrunk announced plans to invest more than $30 billion (around ₹3 lakh crore) in the country by 2030. The investment is among the largest commitments ever made to India’s data centre industry and is expected to accelerate the nation’s ambitions in artificial intelligence, cloud computing and digital services.
The Blackstone-backed company said it aims to develop more than 5 gigawatts (GW) of data centre capacity across multiple states over the next four years. The planned facilities will support growing demand from hyperscale cloud providers, AI companies, financial institutions, digital businesses and government services that require secure, high performance computing infrastructure.
AirTrunk entered the Indian market earlier this year through the acquisition of Lumina CloudInfra, giving it an initial development pipeline of around 600 megawatts across cities including Mumbai, Chennai and Hyderabad. The new investment significantly expands those ambitions and positions India as one of the company’s largest long term markets.
The announcement follows a meeting between AirTrunk founder and Chief Executive Officer Robin Khuda and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Welcoming the investment, the Prime Minister said the project reflects growing international confidence in India’s digital economy and will strengthen the country’s position as a global hub for cloud computing and AI infrastructure.
Demand for data centres has increased sharply as businesses adopt artificial intelligence, cloud-based applications and digital transformation strategies. Modern data centres form the backbone of these technologies by providing the computing power, storage capacity and network connectivity needed to process vast amounts of information securely and efficiently. Industry experts believe India is well placed to become one of the world’s fastest growing data centre markets due to its expanding digital economy, supportive government policies and rising internet usage.
The investment is also expected to create thousands of direct and indirect jobs during construction and operation. It is likely to generate opportunities for engineering firms, construction companies, equipment manufacturers, renewable energy providers and technology suppliers. Local supply chains are also expected to benefit as demand rises for electrical systems, cooling technologies, fibre connectivity and other specialised infrastructure required for large scale data centres.
Sustainability is expected to play a key role in AirTrunk’s expansion strategy. Modern hyperscale data centres increasingly rely on energy efficient designs, advanced cooling technologies and renewable power sources to reduce environmental impact while meeting the growing demand for computing capacity. This aligns with India’s broader efforts to expand digital infrastructure alongside clean energy development.
The announcement comes at a time when global technology companies are increasing investments in India, attracted by the country’s large digital consumer base, skilled workforce and supportive policy environment. As AI adoption accelerates across industries, the need for world class digital infrastructure is expected to rise rapidly, making large scale investments such as AirTrunk’s critical for future economic growth.
With plans to deliver more than 5 GW of capacity by 2030, AirTrunk’s investment marks a significant milestone in India’s digital infrastructure journey. The project is expected to strengthen the country’s technology ecosystem while supporting innovation, employment and long term economic development.
