India’s digital infrastructure sector is set for another major investment after Digital Edge (India) announced plans to develop a hyperscale data centre campus in Palava, near Mumbai. The company has acquired more than 30 acres of land for approximately Rs 1,000 crore, marking another significant step in expanding the country’s rapidly growing data centre industry.
The upcoming campus will have a planned capacity of 270 MW, making it one of the larger data centre developments currently planned in India. The project is expected to support rising demand for cloud computing, artificial intelligence, digital banking, e-commerce and enterprise technology services as businesses continue to accelerate their digital transformation.
The site is located within Lodha Developers’ Green Integrated Data Centre Park, a dedicated ecosystem designed to accommodate large scale digital infrastructure projects. Digital Edge, which is backed by the National Investment and Infrastructure Fund (NIIF), said the investment reflects increasing demand for world class data storage and computing facilities across India.
Data centres have become an essential part of modern infrastructure, supporting everything from online payments and streaming platforms to healthcare systems, government services and industrial operations. As internet usage, cloud adoption and AI applications continue to expand, businesses require larger and more reliable facilities capable of processing and storing vast amounts of information.
The Palava campus will be designed to meet the requirements of hyperscale customers, including global cloud providers, technology companies and large enterprises. Such facilities typically offer high levels of reliability, energy efficiency and security while providing uninterrupted digital services for businesses operating around the clock.
Mumbai continues to attract significant investment in the data centre sector due to its strong fibre connectivity, dependable power infrastructure and concentration of financial institutions and technology companies. Its location also provides access to major submarine cable landing stations, making it one of India’s most important digital connectivity hubs.
Industry experts believe demand for data centre capacity will continue to rise as organisations increasingly adopt artificial intelligence, machine learning and data intensive applications. Government initiatives promoting digital services and domestic data storage are also encouraging further investment in digital infrastructure across the country.
Construction of the new campus is expected to create employment opportunities across engineering, construction, electrical systems and project management. Once operational, the facility will support long term jobs in information technology, network management, cybersecurity and infrastructure maintenance while contributing to the wider digital economy.
India has emerged as one of the fastest growing data centre markets in the Asia Pacific region, attracting investment from domestic developers as well as international operators. Rising internet penetration, rapid digitalisation and growing enterprise demand continue to drive the development of larger, more advanced facilities capable of supporting the country’s expanding digital ecosystem.
Digital Edge’s latest investment reflects growing confidence in India’s long term digital infrastructure potential. As demand for cloud services and AI computing continues to increase, projects such as the Palava campus will play an important role in strengthening the country’s technology backbone, supporting businesses and enabling future economic growth.
