India’s digital economy is opening a new chapter for the infrastructure sector as investments in data centres continue to rise. The rapid adoption of artificial intelligence, cloud computing, digital payments, online services and stricter data localisation requirements is driving demand for modern digital infrastructure across the country. Industry experts believe this growth will create fresh opportunities for construction, power, engineering, logistics and real estate companies over the coming decade.
A recent industry report by KPMG highlighted that India’s data centre market is expanding at a remarkable pace. The report estimates that the country could unlock an opportunity worth nearly USD 90 billion by FY35 across the complete data centre ecosystem. This includes not only the construction of facilities but also power infrastructure, cooling systems, fibre connectivity, maintenance services and technology support.
The rise of artificial intelligence is expected to play a major role in this expansion. AI applications require greater computing power, which means future data centres will need higher capacity, stronger cooling systems and more reliable electricity supplies. As businesses increasingly adopt AI driven technologies, demand for advanced digital infrastructure is expected to accelerate further.
India is also becoming an attractive destination for global technology companies due to its growing digital economy, competitive construction costs, improving connectivity and supportive government policies. Experts believe these advantages position the country as a leading location for future digital infrastructure investments. The sector is also expected to benefit from increasing cloud adoption by businesses, the rollout of 5G networks and expanding digital services across industries.
Digital infrastructure depends on much more than buildings. Every new data centre requires reliable power supply, renewable energy integration, water management, fibre networks and transport connectivity. This creates opportunities for companies involved in engineering, utilities, construction materials, renewable energy and industrial development.
The Government of India has continued to increase capital expenditure on infrastructure while promoting integrated planning through initiatives such as PM GatiShakti and the National Logistics Policy. These measures are helping strengthen the country’s physical and digital infrastructure, creating a favourable environment for large scale investments. Public capital expenditure has increased significantly over the past decade, supporting long term infrastructure development across multiple sectors.
Sustainability is becoming another important priority. Data centres consume significant amounts of electricity and require efficient cooling technologies. Industry experts expect future projects to focus on renewable energy, energy efficient equipment and water conservation to reduce environmental impact while supporting long term growth.
As India’s digital economy continues to expand, data centres are emerging as a key pillar of national infrastructure. Their growth is expected to generate demand across several industries, supporting investment, employment and technological development. For the infrastructure sector, the next phase of growth may be driven not only by roads, airports and railways but also by the digital facilities powering India’s connected future.
