India’s race to become a global digital infrastructure powerhouse has received another major boost after the Uttar Pradesh government approved its new AI Ready Data Centre Policy 2026. The policy aims to attract investments worth more than ₹2 trillion while adding 2 GW of data centre capacity, making the state one of the country’s largest hubs for cloud computing, artificial intelligence and digital services.
Replacing the previous policy that expired earlier this year, the updated framework reflects the growing demand for AI infrastructure, hyperscale facilities and high performance computing. It comes at a time when India is witnessing unprecedented growth in digital adoption, driven by cloud services, fintech, e-commerce, 5G deployment and generative AI applications.
The policy is expected to strengthen Uttar Pradesh’s position alongside established data centre markets such as Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Telangana. Locations including Noida, Greater Noida and the Yamuna Expressway region have already attracted significant investments due to their proximity to the National Capital Region, improving connectivity and expanding power infrastructure.
Industry experts believe the new policy goes beyond increasing server capacity. It seeks to build an ecosystem that supports AI ready facilities capable of handling high density computing workloads while encouraging sustainable development through energy efficient infrastructure.
India’s data centre industry is undergoing rapid transformation. According to recent industry reports, the country is emerging as one of the fastest growing data centre markets in the Asia Pacific region. Rising enterprise digitisation, increasing cloud adoption and AI driven computing requirements are creating sustained demand for new facilities across multiple cities.
For the infrastructure sector, this presents opportunities extending far beyond digital services. Every large scale data centre requires extensive investments in power transmission, substations, fibre connectivity, water management, cooling systems, construction materials and logistics. As a result, data centres are increasingly becoming catalysts for broader infrastructure development.
The policy also aligns with the Centre’s wider push towards expanding India’s digital economy. Recent discussions within the Ministry of Power have highlighted the need for dedicated power planning to support the country’s rapidly growing data centre capacity, with electricity demand from these facilities projected to increase significantly over the next decade.
Developers and infrastructure investors are expected to benefit from the policy’s focus on ease of doing business, investment incentives and long term planning. The availability of land, reliable electricity and high speed connectivity will remain critical factors influencing future project locations.
As artificial intelligence becomes central to industries ranging from healthcare and manufacturing to financial services and retail, demand for advanced computing infrastructure is likely to accelerate further. States that create supportive regulatory frameworks and robust physical infrastructure are expected to attract a larger share of both domestic and global investments.
