Inside a Sustainable Home Built Around Nature

Some homeowners choose a precisely designed home that blends with nature instead of standing out. The architects designed the house around the existing trees rather than cutting them down. The home is surrounded by paddy fields, coffee plantations, hills, a stream and tribal settlements, making the surroundings peaceful and close to nature. The building is low in height and follows the natural shape of the land, making it look as though it has always been part of the landscape.

The walls are made from rammed earth using soil taken from the same site while a pond was being dug. The roof is made of reclaimed terracotta tiles, giving old materials a new lease of life.

Many parts of the house, including the doors and windows, were reclaimed from old buildings in southern India instead of being newly made. Because these old doors and windows were reused, the builders had to measure everything carefully to ensure they fitted perfectly.

Local tribal workers helped build the house, making it more connected to the place. The owners used recyclable materials wherever possible, making it one of the most environmentally friendly home designs.

The house has been designed so that the indoor and outdoor spaces feel connected. It also has a spacious study and writing room with beautiful views of the fields, giving the owners a quiet place to work.

The living room is filled with unique antiques and furniture collected by the owners over many years instead of buying new items. Almost everything inside the home is second-hand, antique or reused.

Bamboo grown on the property was used for sunshades and decorative details. The house also features oxide flooring, which gives it a natural and earthy look.

The main bedroom has a private courtyard, bringing in natural light and fresh air while maintaining privacy.

The owners’ favourite place is the verandah, where they enjoy watching birds, squirrels, cows and children from the nearby village.

The house was built to become part of nature rather than dominate it, showing that simple, sustainable design can create a beautiful home.
