India has taken a significant step towards greener transport infrastructure with the launch of its first domestically built hydrogen-powered train, placing the country among a select group of nations adopting hydrogen fuel technology for rail transport. The milestone reflects India’s growing focus on clean mobility while reinforcing its long-term investment in modern railway infrastructure.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the train from Jind railway station in Haryana as part of a wider infrastructure programme that included projects spanning railways, highways, healthcare and public infrastructure across Haryana, Chandigarh and Punjab. Collectively, the initiatives represent investments worth nearly ₹24,800 crore, underlining the government’s continued emphasis on infrastructure led development.
The hydrogen train, named NaMo Green Rail, has been designed and manufactured in India. It consists of two hydrogen powered driving cars and eight passenger coaches, with a carrying capacity of around 2,600 passengers. The train can operate at speeds of up to 75 kmph and will initially run between Jind and Sonipat in Haryana as part of a pilot project. Dedicated hydrogen storage and refuelling infrastructure has also been developed to support operations.
Unlike conventional diesel powered trains, hydrogen fuel cell technology generates electricity through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen, producing only water vapour as its direct emission. This makes it an attractive solution for railway routes that are not fully electrified, while helping reduce dependence on fossil fuels and lowering carbon emissions.
For India’s infrastructure sector, the significance of the project extends well beyond railway operations. Hydrogen based mobility requires an entirely new ecosystem comprising fuel production, storage facilities, refuelling stations, specialised maintenance depots and safety systems. As adoption expands, it is expected to generate fresh opportunities across engineering, construction, renewable energy, industrial gases and equipment manufacturing.
The project also supports India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission, which aims to position the country as a global producer and consumer of green hydrogen. Indian Railways has already outlined plans to introduce additional hydrogen powered trains on selected heritage and non electrified routes, paving the way for broader deployment in the coming years.
Hydrogen powered transport is gaining momentum globally as countries seek cleaner alternatives to diesel while maintaining operational efficiency. By entering this emerging segment, India strengthens its position in sustainable transport innovation while showcasing its domestic manufacturing capabilities under the Make in India initiative. The successful rollout of the pilot service will provide valuable operational data that can shape future investments in hydrogen powered mobility across the rail network.
For infrastructure developers and investors, the launch signals the emergence of a new growth segment. Large scale deployment of hydrogen technology will require investments in production facilities, transport logistics, specialised railway infrastructure and renewable energy integration. As India’s transport network evolves, hydrogen powered rail could become a key pillar in building a cleaner, more resilient and future ready infrastructure ecosystem.
The launch is another reminder that the future of infrastructure is no longer defined solely by roads, bridges and airports. Increasingly, it is being shaped by technologies that combine engineering excellence with sustainability, creating assets that support economic growth while reducing environmental impact.
