India’s renewable energy infrastructure continues to expand with Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) securing another major interstate transmission project that will help integrate clean energy into the national electricity network. The company has received the Letter of Intent to develop the Transmission System for Integration of Krishnagiri Renewable Energy Zone Phase I under the Tariff Based Competitive Bidding mechanism, reinforcing the country’s commitment to a stronger and more reliable power grid.
The project will be developed on a Build, Own, Operate and Transfer basis and includes the construction of two 765/400 kV substations in Andhra Pradesh along with high capacity 765 kV and 400 kV transmission lines extending across Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka. Once operational, the network will enable large volumes of renewable electricity generated from solar and wind projects to reach demand centres efficiently.
As India accelerates its clean energy transition, expanding transmission infrastructure has become just as important as building new renewable energy projects. Without robust transmission networks, electricity generated by solar parks and wind farms cannot be delivered effectively to industries, businesses and households. The latest project addresses this challenge by creating additional grid capacity for renewable energy integration.
The Krishnagiri Renewable Energy Zone forms part of India’s wider strategy to establish dedicated renewable energy hubs supported by modern interstate transmission systems. These corridors are designed to transport clean electricity across state boundaries while improving grid stability and reducing transmission bottlenecks that can delay renewable energy deployment.
The investment is expected to generate significant opportunities for infrastructure developers, transmission equipment manufacturers and engineering companies. Demand is likely to increase for transmission towers, conductors, transformers, substations, switchgear, protection systems and digital grid management technologies. Large scale construction activity will also create employment across civil engineering, electrical installation and project management.
The project complements India’s long term objective of expanding renewable energy capacity while supporting industrial growth and rising electricity demand. As manufacturing, electric mobility, digital infrastructure and data centres continue to expand, reliable transmission infrastructure will play a critical role in maintaining uninterrupted power supply across regions.
Industry experts also note that stronger interstate transmission systems improve energy security by allowing surplus electricity from one region to be transferred quickly to another during periods of peak demand. This flexibility becomes increasingly important as renewable energy generation varies depending on weather conditions and seasonal patterns.
The latest award further strengthens POWERGRID’s growing portfolio of interstate transmission assets and highlights the continuing investment required to modernise India’s electricity infrastructure. High voltage transmission projects remain essential for supporting renewable energy zones, industrial corridors and rapidly expanding urban centres.
Beyond renewable integration, modern transmission networks also contribute to lower power losses, improved grid resilience and greater operational efficiency. Digital monitoring systems, advanced substations and automated grid management technologies are becoming standard features of new transmission infrastructure, helping utilities respond more effectively to changing electricity demand.
As India moves towards a cleaner and more electrified economy, transmission infrastructure will remain one of the country’s most important infrastructure priorities.
