India’s railway modernisation programme is opening up significant opportunities for technology companies as the government accelerates the rollout of indigenous train safety systems across the national rail network.
Tata Elxsi and NOVA Control Tecnologix, a subsidiary of e2E Rail, have entered into a strategic partnership to develop and deploy Kavach, India’s indigenous automatic train protection system developed by the Research Designs & Standards Organisation (RDSO).
The companies believe the expanding adoption of Kavach across Indian Railways, along with new dedicated freight corridors and planned high speed rail projects, could create a market opportunity worth nearly ₹1 lakh crore over the next six to seven years.
“The market has grown considerably as Indian Railways expands Kavach deployment beyond high density routes. Dedicated freight corridors and upcoming high speed rail corridors are expected to further increase investment in the technology,” said Sourajit Mukherjee, Director and Chief Executive Officer of NOVA Control Tecnologix and e2E Rail.
Beyond the current deployment programme, the partnership is also developing additional railway signalling technologies. Combined with future signalling modernisation initiatives planned by Indian Railways, the companies estimate the overall market opportunity could reach around ₹2 lakh crore by 2031.
The collaboration is currently focused on Kavach 4.0, the latest version of the train protection system. Designed to improve signalling accuracy and train control operations, the system enables continuous real time communication between locomotives and trackside infrastructure through an optical fibre network. The prototype has already received approval for field trials and is undergoing testing.
Once certification is complete, the companies expect to deliver Kavach systems for approximately 2,000 to 3,000 locomotives annually while deploying trackside infrastructure across nearly 1,000 kilometres every year.
Jayaraj Rajapandian, Head of Aerospace, Rail and Off Highway at Tata Elxsi, said the indigenous platform has been designed to deliver significant cost advantages compared to similar train protection systems deployed internationally.
According to Rajapandian, the solution is expected to cost around one fifth less than comparable global technologies due to its complete design and development in India under the Make in India initiative.
He also noted that the system features a modular and scalable architecture integrated with artificial intelligence and machine learning capabilities. The platform has already been designed to support future upgrades, including Kavach 5.0, which will incorporate advanced cybersecurity features.
Indian Railways expects Kavach 5.0 to be deployed on future Vande Bharat 4.0 trains, enabling shorter headways between trains while maintaining high safety standards and improving network capacity.
The companies expect to begin their first Kavach trial orders in September and are targeting commercial deployment by the end of the 2027-28 financial year. NOVA Control Tecnologix has committed around ₹100 crore towards the development of safety critical components as part of the joint investment programme.
As India continues investing in railway infrastructure, indigenous technologies such as Kavach are expected to play a central role in improving operational safety, increasing network efficiency and supporting the country’s long term transport modernisation goals.
