Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) has partnered with Modest Infrastructure to build a new shipyard at Ratanpar in Bhavnagar, Gujarat.
The project will involve an investment of around ₹3,000 crore and will be GRSE’s first shipyard outside Kolkata. The expansion comes after the company received Navratna status, giving it greater financial and operational freedom to invest and grow.
The investment will be made in phases. The shipyard will be spread across 58 hectares and will have a 1.4 km waterfront along the Gulf of Cambay. Of the total land, 16.1 hectares belongs to Modest Infrastructure, while the remaining land will be leased from the Gujarat Government.
The project has already received a recommendation for environmental clearance from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.
Once completed, the shipyard will have the capacity to build:
One ship of up to 45,000 DWT each year.
Three ships of up to 20,000 DWT each year.
Six offshore support and platform supply vessels each year.
The facility will also carry out repair work for offshore rigs and support vessels.
GRSE is also planning to enter the container manufacturing business. The move is supported by the Union Budget, which has announced a ₹10,000 crore scheme to strengthen container manufacturing in India.
The project is part of the Government of India’s ₹69,725 crore shipbuilding package, aimed at expanding the country’s shipbuilding industry. India plans to become one of the top 10 shipbuilding nations by 2030 and one of the top five by 2047.
GRSE is currently expanding its shipbuilding capacity from 28 ships to 32 ships. The company is also planning to develop new shipbuilding facilities in West Bengal and Gujarat.
Modest Infrastructure already operates a shipbuilding and repair yard at Ramsar in Bhavnagar. The facility can build ships of up to 6,000 DWT and also provides ship repair services.
