India’s Poll Bound States to Receive One Quarter of New National Highway Construction in FY27

India’s road infrastructure push is set to accelerate across seven poll bound states in FY27, with nearly one quarter of all new national highway construction planned in these regions. The move highlights the government’s continued focus on improving connectivity, supporting economic growth and strengthening logistics infrastructure ahead of state elections.

According to reports, states including Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and Punjab will account for around 25% of national highways being built during the financial year 2026 to 2027. These states are also expected to receive nearly 20% of all highway projects awarded during the year, making them key beneficiaries of India’s ongoing infrastructure expansion.

The investment is expected to improve freight movement, reduce travel times and strengthen links between industrial hubs, manufacturing centres and agricultural regions. Better road infrastructure also supports logistics, warehousing, real estate development and regional businesses by making transport more efficient.

India has significantly increased capital spending on roads over the past few years, with expressways, economic corridors and greenfield highways forming an important part of its long term infrastructure strategy. The latest allocation indicates that highway construction remains a national priority despite changing economic conditions.

Road connectivity plays a major role in attracting private investment. Improved transport networks often encourage industrial parks, logistics facilities, commercial developments and housing projects to emerge along newly developed corridors. Cities connected by modern highways also become more attractive for manufacturing, warehousing and service industries.

For states such as Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat, which are already witnessing large investments in data centres, manufacturing and industrial infrastructure, improved highway connectivity could further strengthen their position as investment destinations. Punjab is also expected to benefit from better connectivity supporting trade, agriculture and regional mobility.

The announcement also reflects the growing importance of infrastructure in India’s broader economic strategy. Highways not only improve passenger movement but also lower logistics costs, improve supply chain efficiency and create employment during both construction and operation.

For the construction sector, the increased pipeline of projects offers fresh opportunities for EPC contractors, engineering firms, equipment manufacturers and material suppliers. It also reinforces confidence in continued public investment, which has become one of the main drivers of infrastructure growth across the country.

As India continues expanding its transport network, the concentration of highway projects in these seven states is expected to support regional development while improving connectivity between cities, industrial clusters and emerging economic corridors.
